history on Jan 28th

22 years ago today the Challenger exploded.

Do you remember that, mom? We were at the hospital in Texas and every tv in every corner of every room was showing it taking off into the sky and then boom. Just like 9-11, every tv of ever corner of ever room kept replaying the scene. It was surreal. But I guess even moreso since I was so young.

Christa McAuliffe was the darling of this flight. She was an American teacher from New Hampshire who was selected from among more than 11,000 applicants to be the first teacher in space.

I remember when we were thrilled for the first woman in space, Ride Sally Ride.

Sigh.

They're still remembered.

I was living in Orlando and was riding to work with a co-worker at the time. It was the only shuttle launch I saw live and in person.

I was running a door-to-door canvass for the Florida Consumer Action Network and went out canvassing that afternoon...it was sureal.
